Healthcare Assistant

What is a HCA (Healthcare Assistant)?

A HCA works within the Nursing Team in a supportive role. The HCA role is perfect if you enjoy communicating and caring for people.

They hold their own clinics performing tasks delegated by the Nursing team and after training can see patients for appointments such as:

  • Phlebotomy
  • Blood pressures and general observations including BMIs
  • NHS health checks

Plus many more.

How do I become a HCA?

You do not need to have prior experience or qualifications, although if you have any previous experience of caring for family or friends or voluntary working in a caring capacity this would be good to add to your CV.

You can apply to vacancies advertised either directly to a GP practice or via Primary Care Careers where they also tell you a little more about the role Healthcare Assistant | Primary Care Careers (eoeprimarycarecareers.nhs.uk)

Once in post you would begin by doing a care certificate which is free online training with support from a mentor in practice.

You would also be able to receive support from BLMK in any training offers available. Please contact the Training Hub to find out if there are any current offers available. You can contact us at: blmkicb.blmk.traininghub@nhs.net
