Basic awareness for all front line staff in all health and social care environments, (residential, domiciliary, nursing and community), including:
- Volunteers
- Personal assistants of care
- Customer service representatives
- Housing officers
- Community centre staff
To develop an awareness of and the ability to understand the actions and choices made by an individual with Dementia
By the end of the course delegates will be able to:
• identify the signs and indicators of dementia and recognise the impact in individuals and their families
• describe the most common types of Dementia and about other conditions that may be mistaken for Dementia
• make a personal connection with the experience of Dementia through arrange of experiential exercises
• identify the ways in which the ability to use and understand language can be affected by Dementia, and explore the impact of non-verbal communication and ways of adapting their own language & communication in a way appropriate to the individual
• explore how the environment & how the way care is provided can affect the individuals experience of Dementia
• explore the principles underlying a strength based, person centred approach to care and examine how this can be applied to helping clients retain the skills of daily living.
Externally commissioned provider by Luton Council’s Learning & Development Team
Skills for Care has listed this as a core and mandatory training under “specific conditions” for all ASC workforce. It supports:

Skills for Care recommend learning is refreshed and knowledge and competence assessed at least annually and when a new risk is introduced or needed. Refresher is a minimum 3 years.
